The best camera for YouTube, and whether you need one

Sony's ZV-E10 II stops after about five minutes of 4K until you change one buried setting. That kind of thing decides a camera, not sensor size.

The most useful advice is not to buy one yet

If you are shooting talking-head video, tutorials or a podcast, the phone already in your pocket records 4K at a quality YouTube will happily re-encode, and no viewer has ever named your sensor. What they do notice is light, sound and framing, and all three cost less than a body. Eryn Newman and Norbert Schwarz, writing in Science Communication in 2018, played people identical talks in high and low audio quality and found the low-quality version made both the research and the researcher seem worse. Nobody has published the equivalent finding for sensor size. Buy a microphone, one large soft light and a tripod that puts the lens at eye height first, then revisit the camera when those genuinely stop being the limit. That order is not modesty, it is where the visible gains are.

What a camera does buy you, once light and sound are fixed

Four things, and it is worth being specific about them. A larger sensor with a fast lens separates you from your background optically instead of with a processed blur that smears the edge of your hair. Interchangeable lenses let you sit further back, which removes the wide-angle face distortion a phone gives you at arm's length. A real microphone input with on-screen meters means you hear a problem during the take rather than in the edit. And a body whose only job is recording keeps recording while a phone takes a call, throttles, or fills its storage. Note what has dropped off that list: Apple's own specifications for the iPhone 17 Pro list Apple Log 2, ProRes RAW and 4K at 120fps. Capture format stopped being the dividing line.

Recording limits and heat, the spec that ends shoots

Sony publishes no recording limit for the ZV-E10 II, and DPReview's review of it found about five minutes of 4K at 25C on default settings, then roughly an hour and seventeen minutes of top-quality 4K/60 once Auto Power OFF Temp was set to High. Videomaker, running 4K/60 10-bit at 200Mbps, saw it shut down every 20 to 25 minutes. Both tests are honest; the buried setting explains most of the gap, and almost no spec comparison mentions it. DPReview recorded over an hour of 4K on the Fujifilm X-M5 at around 25C, falling to roughly 20 minutes at 40C, and found the Canon EOS R50 V throttling near 55 minutes at room temperature unless that same threshold is raised. For a 90-minute podcast, this is the number that decides the purchase.

Autofocus, because you are also the operator

Recording alone means you are the subject, the camera operator and the focus puller at once, so an autofocus miss is not a soft loss. It is a retake you will not discover until the edit. Here one reviewer testing several bodies the same way beats any spec table. DPReview called the Sony a6700's video autofocus top-notch, with dependable face and eye detection you can redirect by touching the screen mid-take. It found the Canon EOS R50 V tracked reliably, honouring the area you picked and holding subjects it could not classify. It was blunt about the Fujifilm X-M5: tracking prone to losing its subject, unable to judge how fast a subject is approaching, and hunting in low light. Weight that heavily if you talk to camera unaccompanied.

Whether it can also be your webcam

If the same camera has to serve meetings and livestreams, look for UVC and UAC support: the computer then sees it as an ordinary webcam over one USB-C cable, with no capture card and no driver install. Canon's EOS R50 V streams 4K this way, though DPReview notes it falls back to 1080p if it is drawing power over that same cable, which matters before a three-hour stream. The ZV-E10 II reaches 4K/30 over USB but wants a USB 3.2 port and cable to do it. Sony's help pages for the a6700 list 4K at 15fps or 1080p at 60fps, and for a talking head the smoother 1080p is the better pick. Fujifilm's X-M5 manual documents a webcam mode. HDMI into a capture card still works, and is still another box to fail.

Vertical clips, and what a 9:16 crop really costs

If clips from this footage will end up vertical, resolution stops being a vanity number. Cropping a 16:9 frame to 9:16 keeps the full height and discards the sides, so a 3840 by 2160 UHD file leaves you 1215 by 2160 pixels. That clears the 1080 by 1920 a vertical clip is delivered at, but barely, and it leaves nothing spare for reframing, punch-ins or stabilisation crop. From 1080p the same crop yields about 608 pixels of width and you are upscaling before you start. Open-gate recording is the direct fix: the X-M5 reads its whole 3:2 sensor at 6240 by 4160, so a full-height vertical slice is 2340 pixels wide. Frame slightly wide, sit off-centre, and the vertical crop becomes a decision instead of a rescue.

Log profiles, and whether a beginner should touch them

A log profile records a flat, low-contrast image that holds more highlight and shadow detail for grading later. Every camera here offers one: Canon Log 3 on the R50 V, S-Log3 and S-Cinetone on the a6700, 10-bit 4:2:2 capture on the ZV-E10 II, and on the X-M5 the older F-Log rather than F-Log2, which DPReview flags. So the question is not whether you can, it is whether you will. Log costs you on the day. The preview looks wrong, so exposure is harder to judge; you have to expose deliberately bright to keep noise out of the shadows; and every clip needs a grade before anyone can watch it. If you publish weekly and grade nothing, a standard profile, or something like S-Cinetone that is designed to look finished straight out of camera, gets you a better video in less time.

Buy in this order, and shoot for the crop

A defensible sequence: fix the audio, add one big soft light, raise the camera to eye height and move further back with a longer lens, and only then change the body. When you do change it, buy for the failure you actually hit. Long takes mean buying the camera that runs cool, and changing the thermal setting on day one. Alone in frame means buying the autofocus. Mostly vertical clips cut from a long recording means buying resolution headroom and framing with the crop already in mind, which is what makes reframed clips look deliberate rather than salvaged. What is the best camera for YouTube in 2026?

There is no single answer, because the failure modes differ. For long takes, DPReview recorded over an hour of 4K on the Fujifilm X-M5 at room temperature. For autofocus you can trust alone, the same publication rated the Sony a6700 top-notch and the Canon EOS R50 V reliable, and criticised the X-M5. Pick against whichever of those you hit first.

Is a phone good enough for a YouTube channel?

For talking-head video, tutorials and podcasts, usually yes. Apple lists Apple Log 2, ProRes RAW and 4K at 120fps on the iPhone 17 Pro, so capture quality is not the bottleneck. The bottleneck is lighting, audio and framing. A microphone, one soft light and a tripod at eye height will visibly improve your video more than a camera body of the same price.

Do cameras still have a 30-minute recording limit?

Mostly not. The old 29-minute-59-second cap existed because EU import duty classified anything recording longer as a video camera and taxed it higher. The World Trade Organization's phased tariff update removed that reason by July 2019. Some models kept the limit anyway, so check the specification, and remember that heat, battery and card capacity can still stop a take early.
