What average view duration actually measures
Average view duration is a number of seconds. Average percentage viewed is a share. Watch time is the total. Mixing them up is how the same video ends up looking like both a hit and a flop.

The definition, in YouTube's own words
Average view duration is the average length of a playback of your video, measured in seconds. That is almost exactly the wording YouTube uses in its Analytics API reference, which defines the metric as the average length, in seconds, of video playbacks, and notes that since 13 December 2021 it excludes looping clips traffic. In Studio you normally see it rendered as minutes and seconds, and YouTube's engagement help page describes it in plainer language as the average minutes watched among those who stayed to watch. The mechanical version: add up how long every playback lasted, divide by the number of playbacks. It is an absolute quantity of time, not a share of the video, and that single distinction causes most of the confusion around the metric.
Watch time is the total. This is the average
These two get used interchangeably and they answer completely different questions. Watch time, which YouTube defines as the amount of time viewers have watched your video, is a sum — every second, from everybody, added together. Average view duration is that same total divided across playbacks. So a video can post enormous watch time and mediocre average view duration if a lot of people arrived and left early, and it can show excellent average view duration on modest watch time if hardly anyone arrived at all. One measures size, the other measures how well the thing held. There is a quirk worth knowing too: because a single view can include rewinds and rewatches, YouTube notes watch time can exceed what you would get by multiplying views by the runtime.

Average percentage viewed is the same thing, normalised
YouTube defines average percentage viewed as the average percentage of a video watched during a playback, with the same looping-clips exclusion attached. It is average view duration expressed as a share of the runtime rather than a count of seconds, which makes it the only one of the two you can fairly compare across videos of different lengths. Work through an example and the gap is obvious. A forty-minute video where people watch a quarter of it has a ten-minute average view duration. A four-minute video that nearly everyone finishes has under four. Measured in seconds the long video wins easily; measured in percentage it loses badly. Neither reading is wrong. They are answers to different questions, and you need to know which question you asked.
YouTube has said outright that both inform ranking
You do not have to infer why this matters. YouTube's search and discovery guidance states plainly that its systems use both average view duration and average percentage viewed as signals to inform ranking, alongside likes and post-watch survey results. That is unusually direct from a platform that says very little about how ranking works, and it is the reason the engagement tab deserves more of your attention than the view counter does. The same page attaches a caveat worth keeping: even with good metrics on a video, you may get fewer impressions because videos from other channels are performing better. Retention is a signal, not an entitlement. Improving it improves your odds; it does not reserve you an audience.
What counts as good, and why nobody can honestly tell you
Search for a benchmark and you will find tidy tables: this percentage for videos under five minutes, that percentage for ten-minute videos, another for hour-long ones. They are everywhere, they broadly agree with each other, and almost none of them names a dataset, a sample size, or a method. YouTube publishes no average view duration benchmark at all, which makes sense once you accept how much the number depends on runtime, format, topic and traffic source. The one thing measured data does establish is that percentage falls as length rises. Wistia's State of Video report, drawn from video hosted on its own platform, put average engagement rate for three-to-five-minute videos at 43%, and found a thirty-to-sixty-minute video runs roughly half the engagement rate of a one-to-three-minute video while collecting over ten times the total watch time. That is business video, not YouTube, so take the shape rather than the numbers.
The curve tells you what the average cannot
Two videos can post identical average view duration for opposite reasons: one lost half its audience in the opening seconds and kept the rest to the end, the other held everybody briefly and bled out steadily. Only the audience retention report separates them. YouTube requires the video to be at least 60 seconds long with at least 100 views, and the data typically takes one to two days to process. Read four shapes. A flat stretch means viewers stayed through that section. A gradual decline is normal, and YouTube says videos generally taper off across playback. Spikes are parts being rewatched or shared. Dips are parts being skipped or abandoned. The report also gives you an intro figure: the percentage of your audience still watching after the first 30 seconds.
Shorts are measured on a different basis entirely
Do not put Shorts and long-form average view duration in the same column of a spreadsheet. YouTube states that for Shorts the metric is calculated from engaged views and their corresponding watch time, and engaged views are defined in the Analytics API as the number of times videos were viewed past the initial seconds. That is a different denominator from the one used on long-form, where every playback counts. A Short with a two-second average view duration and a twelve-minute video with a four-minute average view duration are not on the same scale and cannot be ranked against each other. Compare Shorts to your other Shorts, and long-form to your other long-form, or you will draw a conclusion the numbers do not support.
Use it to decide what to cut, not just what to grade
The most practical use of retention data is not scoring published videos, it is choosing raw material. The moments where your curve goes flat or spikes are, by definition, the moments people watched twice or refused to leave, and those are the segments most likely to survive on their own as a clip. Pull the timestamps out of the retention report before you open an editor, then cut from there rather than from memory.
