How to use Pinterest: the setup, the formats and the search mindset

Pinterest reported 640 million monthly active users in its Q2 2026 results, and almost none of them are scrolling a friend feed — they are searching. That changes what you publish, how you title it, and how long it keeps working.

8 minute read

Pinterest is a search engine wearing a mood board

Almost everything you know about posting comes from feed platforms, where a post gets a few hours of distribution and then dies. Pinterest does not work like that. People arrive with a query — small kitchen storage, thirty-minute weeknight dinners, home gym layout — and Pinterest returns images that match it, the way Google returns links. Pinterest reported 640 million monthly active users in its second-quarter 2026 results, up 11% year over year, and its entire pitch to advertisers rests on those people showing up with intent rather than to catch up with friends. The practical consequence is that your Pin title, your description and your board name are ranking signals, not decoration. Publish a nice image with no words attached and you have published something unfindable.

Business account or personal: what each one actually unlocks

A business account is free, takes a few minutes, and has no follower threshold. Pinterest's help documentation says you can convert an existing personal account and keep your Pins and followers, and switch back later if you want; it also notes that business accounts must be public, so a private profile has to be flipped first. What converting gets you is Pin analytics, the ads tools and the Business Hub. What it does not get you is everything — product catalogs, custom audiences built from your site traffic, and attribution on Pins other people make from your pages all sit behind a separate step. If your goal is traffic rather than an ad budget, convert anyway. The analytics alone are the difference between iterating and guessing.

Claim your website before you publish anything

Claiming tells Pinterest a domain belongs to you, and it is the highest-leverage ten minutes in the whole setup. Pinterest lists four methods: adding an HTML meta tag, uploading an HTML file, adding a TXT record to your DNS, or connecting through Google Merchant Center. Once it goes through, your profile picture and name appear on every Pin that links to your site — including Pins other people created from your pages, which is often more of your footprint than you expect — and the analytics for those saves flow back to your account. Claiming also unlocks catalogs and custom audiences. The one constraint is that you must own the domain and be able to edit its source, which is why you generally cannot claim a marketplace shop on Etsy, eBay or Amazon.

Boards are a taxonomy, not a scrapbook

Boards are how Pinterest works out what a Pin is about, so build them as categories rather than as a personal collection. Name them the way somebody would type them — small kitchen storage ideas beats vibes — and keep each one narrow enough that every Pin genuinely belongs in it. A board with forty tightly related Pins reads as a topic. A board called inspiration holding four hundred unrelated ones reads as noise, and dilutes the signal for everything inside it. Board sections let you subdivide once a board outgrows itself. Pinterest's own creator guidance is unusually relaxed about frequency: it suggests adding fresh content weekly and states plainly that quality and relevance matter more than volume, which is a very different posture from the daily-or-die advice on short-form video platforms.

Idea Pins are gone — there is one Pin format now

If a guide tells you to choose between standard Pins, video Pins and Idea Pins, it is stale. Pinterest announced in May 2023, as TechCrunch reported at the time, that it was folding Idea Pins back into a single unified Pin, and that merge is finished. One create flow now takes a still image or a video, supports several items playing in sequence in one Pin, and carries the editing features — text overlay, stickers, music — that used to be Idea-Pin-only. The part that matters most is links. Idea Pins could not link out, which made them close to useless for driving traffic. Every Pin can now link anywhere, and you can edit the title, description and destination after publishing, which was not previously possible.

Video Pin specs, straight from Pinterest's own doc

Most of the numbers circulating in third-party guides are ad specs quoted as if they were organic ones. Pinterest's own Pin spec page is the authority, and it says an organic video Pin runs from a minimum of 4 seconds to a maximum of 5 minutes — not the 15 minutes you will see repeated across roundup posts. Encoding is H.264 or H.265, delivered as .MP4 or .M4V on the web with .MOV also accepted on mobile. The recommended shape is 9:16 at 1080 by 1920, and 1:2, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5 and 1:1 are all supported. Titles cap at 100 characters and descriptions at 800. Pinterest also publishes safe-zone margins, because its own interface overlays the top and bottom of a full-screen Pin.

The long-lifespan claim, honestly

You will read everywhere that a Pin has a half-life of three and a half months. The number is real but ancient: it comes from a 2013 study by an analytics firm called Piqora, reported at the time by VentureBeat, which found half the site visits from a Pin arrived more than 3.5 months after it was saved. Piqora no longer exists, Pinterest has never published its own lifespan figure, and the ranking system has been rebuilt many times since. Treat the direction as sound and the decimal as folklore. Pins do keep surfacing in search long after publication — the real advantage over feed platforms — but front-load the setup and publish steadily rather than chase a number nobody has re-measured. A 9:16 clip you already cut for Reels or Shorts uploads unchanged, so tools like FrameOS that pull vertical clips from long video make Pinterest inventory a by-product.

FAQ

Is Pinterest social media or a search engine?

Functionally it behaves like a search engine with a visual results page. People arrive with a query rather than a feed of friends, and Pins surface through search and related-content recommendations long after publication. That is why titles, descriptions and board names carry real weight, and why follower count matters less on Pinterest than on almost any other platform.

Do Idea Pins still exist on Pinterest?

No. Pinterest announced in May 2023 that Idea Pins were being merged into a single unified Pin format, and that transition is complete. The features that were exclusive to Idea Pins — stickers, text overlay, music, multi-page content — are now available in the standard create flow, and unlike Idea Pins, every Pin can link out to a destination of your choice.

How long can a Pinterest video Pin be?

Pinterest's own Pin spec page gives a minimum of 4 seconds and a maximum of 5 minutes for organic video Pins. Longer limits quoted in third-party guides generally refer to advertising formats rather than organic uploads. Recommended dimensions are 9:16 at 1080 by 1920, with 1:1, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5 and 1:2 also supported.

Do you need a business account to get traffic from Pinterest?

Not strictly — every Pin can link out regardless of account type. But a business account is free and gives you Pin analytics, and claiming your website adds attribution on Pins other people create from your pages plus analytics on those saves. Without either, you are publishing without any way to see what worked.
